Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What equipment do I need to train in the Renegade Rolls program (jiu jitsu)?

Members attending Renegade Rolls should wear a tight fitting t shirt or rash guard and grappling/mma shorts. Tighter fitting tops ensures that fingers don't get caught in shirt openings and shorts that don't have zippers/pockets keeps the mats and students safe from unnecessary scratches. Additionally, some members choose to wear spandex "spanx" under their shorts during cold weather or long sleeve rash guards. Optional equipment include cups and mouthpieces.

What equipment do I need to train in the Renegade Strike program (kickboxing)?

The same clothing that is worn in the jiu jitsu classes can be worn in the kickboxing classes. Additionally, kickboxing/muay thai specific shorts with high splits on each side are often preferred by students to help limit dexterity issues while throwing kicks. Equipment needed include boxing gloves (12/14/16oz.), shin pads, a cup, and a mouthpiece.

What equipment do I need to participate in the Renegade Burn (HIIT) program?

General workout clothes can be worn in our HIIT classes. The only required equipment is boxing gloves. The gym does provide loaner gloves to new students or in case someone forgot theirs and we ensure loaner gloves are properly cleaned after every use. It is, however, highly encouraged that students eventually purchase their own pair of gloves.

What etiquette/rules does the gym implement?

Our main priority at RTC is to ensure the safety of our members. Coming to practice clean, having clipped finger and toe nails, and ensuring you have proper gear for your training are all responsibilities of our students to ensure our communities safety.

Is training jiu jitsu or kickboxing dangerous?

Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing fall into the category of combat sports and inherently comes with some risk of injury.  However, focus on fundamentals, communication with your training partner, refraining from erratic movements (“spazzing”) and our culture of safety oriented training significantly mitigates risk of injury.  Warming up, taking care of/listen to your body, moving with awareness and taping early/often to help keep injuries from interrupting your training.

Should I get in shape before coming?

There is a common myth that you need to be in excellent physical fitness before you begin training. This is not true. The best time to start training is NOW. Get started, take it at your own pace, develop a routine and you will inevitably progress both in skills as well as with your physical fitness. Regardless of where you are on your journey, the culture, climate, and people at RTC are here to support you.

Am I required to spar during live rounds?

You are not required to spar during live rounds. If you would prefer to drill the techniques with a partner you are free to do that instead. Students who are new to jiu jitsu will participate in an onboarding process that slowly introduces them to live sparring with short, controlled situational rounds with clear objectives prior to being included in the live sparring sessions. If you are injured we also advice you to listen to your body. Often times, depending on the injury, students can participate in some aspects of class but refrain from hard training until they are healthy again.

How often should I train?

For new students, training 2-3 times a week is usually a good starting point. For students looking to compete or develop at a faster pace, 3-4 times a week is typical. The key to improvement is consistency. Consistency over the long run will outpace high frequency training schedules that are often hard to maintain. Listening to your body is always a part of best practices when it comes to training frequency.

Where can I buy the necessary equipment?

Renegades Training Center has all of the equipment you need for any of our classes in our online pro shop. Products are either already in inventory or shipped to the store for pick up. We source our equipment from reputable brands to ensure quality. If you prefer to buy equipment from other companies, our coaches can advise you on brands based on quality/price to meet your needs.
